Nearly a hundred years later than the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod and Plymouth Rock, John and Catthren Margeson arrived in New York. They arrived after 1703, for their names were not on a census taken in that year. They arrived before the birth of their son, also named John, in 1716. This John and his wife, Elizabeth Margeson, were Thomas' parents. Then, in 1761, Thomas was born. Each and all of the above three generations of Margeson's were English citizens now living in the English Colony of New York. Note the name "York" and get out your History of England. What's in the name? From an old, out-of-print History of New York, The City by David T. Valentine, Clerk of the Common Council, G. P. Putnam & Co., No. 10 Park Place, N.Y., 1853, we trace the name of John, father of Thomas, to an official list (p. 390). There we find the name of John Margeson. He was one of a list of men who were more or less "graduates" of the Indentured System used by the English.
