About this place

Sutton Hall is a historic manor house in Cheshire, England, with origins dating to the medieval period. For centuries it served as the center of a rural estate and was home to members of the county gentry. The present hall largely dates from the seventeenth century and reflects the traditional timber-framed and stone architecture for which Cheshire is known.

History

The estate became closely associated with the Davenport family through the marriage of Davenport, a prominent lawyer who later became Chief Baron of the Exchequer, to Mary Sutton, an heiress of the Sutton family. During the seventeenth century, Sutton Hall served as one of the principal seats of the Davenports and remained an important Cheshire estate before passing to other families through inheritance and marriage.
