Keowee Plantation, also known as Keowee Heights or Twelve Mile Plantation, was a large plantation estate located near the junction of the Keowee and Twelve Mile rivers in present-day Pickens County, South Carolina. Established by John Ewing Colhoun, Sr., the plantation served as the family's principal residence and was one of the most prominent estates in the South Carolina Upcountry. The property included a substantial plantation house, agricultural lands, and numerous supporting outbuildings associated with plantation operations.
History
Founded in 1792 by John Ewing Colhoun, Sr., a future United States senator, Keowee Plantation developed into an important agricultural and political center in the South Carolina frontier. Following Colhoun's death in 1802, management of the estate passed to his son, John Ewing Colhoun, Jr.. The plantation remained closely associated with the Colhoun family throughout the nineteenth century and was worked by enslaved laborers who supported its agricultural production. The plantation house was destroyed by fire in 1880, but the site remains historically significant as part of the region's early settlement and plantation heritage. Today, the former plantation lands are preserved within the Clemson Experimental Forest.
