Charles Leistner

Charles Leistner (Leissner) was an early German settler and community leader at Broad Bay (now Waldoboro, Maine). Appointed by Samuel Waldo as agent for the settlement, he oversaw the distribution of land and provisions to incoming colonists and exercised the authority of a local magistrate. During the French and Indian War, he served as captain of a company of scouts protecting the frontier settlement. Contemporary records and later histories refer to him as both Leistner and Leissner, with one account noting that he personally used the spelling Leissner on a 1756 petition. Following his death, Mary Leissner was appointed administratrix of his estate.
