Estimated birth year: "After 1290" based on older brothers, including William born c1288. It was changed 18 August 2020 from "about 1273", which had been based on the assumption that he was 25 in 1298, noting that his birth "before 1285" given by Richardson in 2011's Magna Carta Ancestry was not in 2013's Royal Ancestry. However, the birth year estimate of 1273 does not work with his mother's birth year estimate (1265). His parents had seven sons, and their 2nd son William was "age 40 in 1328" (Royal Ancestry, volume IV, page 412 POWICK 9.iii). Their son Roger's entry (Royal Ancestry, volume IV, page 523 SAINT JOHN 10) credits him with a son named Roger who had previously been attributed to his older brother Giles (see the footnote on page 524; Giles' entry, POWICK 10, does not include a birth year but calls him 5th son of Walter and Alice).
