An original legal bond from colonial Massachusetts, a formal obligation signed by Hugh Rogers and witnessed by officials including David King and Samuel Hardin. This document appointed Rogers as guardian to minor children and bound him to faithfully discharge his duties as prescribed by law. It's printed with blanks filled in by hand in period script, and signed and sealed by the court.
The bond is a rare surviving example of 18th-century American legal administration, showing how guardianships were formally established and overseen. It bears the signatures of the guardian and court officials, and the paper shows age-appropriate toning and creasing from centuries of storage. The handwriting is clear and legible throughout. A great piece for collectors of American legal history, genealogy, or colonial documents, and it would display beautifully framed.
