An original leaf from a Latin Bible printed in 1486 by Johann Amerbach in Basel. It is an incunable, printed in the first decades after Gutenberg, and is over 535 years old.
The leaf is headed "Zacharias" (Zechariah) and printed in bold gothic type in two columns. It covers Zechariah 1–8, including the prophet's visions of the horses among the myrtles, the four horns and four smiths, the man with the measuring line, and Joshua the high priest clothed in filthy garments. Large hand-painted red initials open Chapters 6 and 7, and red rubrication is added by hand throughout.
An early reader has added Latin marginal notes, marking key passages and interpretations. The notes give a rare glimpse of how this Bible was studied centuries ago.
The paper shows age-appropriate toning, light soiling, and a deckled edge, while the printed text remains crisp and legible. It's ideal for collectors of Bibles, incunabula, or religious texts and would look beautiful framed.
