An original leaf from a Latin Bible printed in 1486 by Johann Amerbach in Basel. It is an incunable, printed in the first decades after Gutenberg, and is over 535 years old.
The leaf is headed "Machabeorum I" (1 Maccabees) and printed in bold gothic type in two columns. It covers 1 Maccabees 4–5, including Judas Maccabeus's victories over the Syrian armies and the cleansing of the desecrated Temple. The new altar is built and dedicated on the 25th of Chislev, the event remembered as Hanukkah. A large hand-painted red initial opens Chapter 5, and red rubrication is added by hand throughout.
The paper shows age-appropriate toning, a few small stains, and a deckled edge, while the printed text remains crisp and legible. It's ideal for collectors of Bibles, incunabula, or Judaica and would look beautiful framed.
