If something in this archive should not be here, tell us and we will look at it. You do not need an account, and you do not need a lawyer.
What you can report
- copyright infringement: material published here without the rights holder's permission;
- incorrect attribution: a photograph or document credited to the wrong source;
- an unauthorised photograph or document;
- a privacy concern about a living person, including yourself;
- material displayed in error, or under the wrong visibility setting;
- an ownership record or claim you believe is wrong;
- any other legitimate concern about content.
How to report it
Use the contact page on this site (holdens-archive.org/support) or write to holden.archive.history@gmail.com. Your report reaches the administrators directly and is recorded.
Please include:
- your name and an email address we can reply to;
- which item concerns you: the page address, or the record's archive ID;
- what the problem is, in your own words;
- for a copyright report: what work you say has been infringed, and where the original can be seen;
- your relationship to the material: the owner, an agent, the person depicted, or another interested party.
For copyright reports we also ask you to confirm that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised, that the information you have given is accurate, and that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them. You sign electronically by typing your full name.
We ask for what is needed to act on the report and no more. Please do not send identification documents, financial information or other sensitive material unless we specifically ask.
What happens next
Every report is recorded and moves through a status:
| Status | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| New | Received, not yet reviewed |
| Under Review | An administrator is looking into it |
| Additional Information Requested | We have asked you for something |
| Temporarily Restricted | The material is hidden from public view while we look |
| Removed | The material has been taken down |
| Restored | Material previously restricted has been put back |
| Rejected | We do not think action is warranted; we will say why |
| Resolved | Closed |
We may restrict material while a report is being reviewed. That is a precaution, not a finding against anyone. Every change is recorded in an internal history, so the handling of a report can be reviewed afterwards.
We are a small operation. We aim to acknowledge reports within 7 days, although complex matters can take longer, and we will keep you updated.
If your material was removed and you disagree
Write to holden.archive.history@gmail.com explaining why you believe the material was correctly published: that you hold the rights, that it is in the public domain, or that the report was mistaken. We will reconsider, and we will tell you the outcome.
Repeated infringement
Accounts that repeatedly submit infringing material may be suspended or closed.
Misuse of this process
Do not use this process to remove accurate historical information you would rather was not public, or to win a research disagreement. Reports made in bad faith may be refused.
Formal legal notices
Holden's Archive has not registered a designated agent with the U.S. Copyright Office. This process is therefore an informal, good-faith process and is not a statutory takedown procedure. If we register an agent in future, we will publish a new version of this policy with the agent's details and the information a formal notice must contain.
